Why is my kitchen damp? Understanding the problem
The kitchen is the most moisture-loaded room in the house — boiling pans alone release litres of vapour — and in North London's terraces it is very often housed in a rear addition ('back addition' or outrigger) with solid one-brick walls, its own low-quality roof junction, and the property's coldest corners. Fitted units then seal the wall surface away from warmth and airflow, so moisture that would evaporate elsewhere accumulates unseen.

Then moisture-profile the wall behind and beside units (removing kick-boards and, where needed, a unit back), test for ground salts, check the external face for defects, and measure humidity and extraction performance. Treatment
- Leaks: repair, dry the void with ventilation or dehumidification, replace damaged unit components.
- Condensation: install ducted extraction (a hood vented outside, not recirculating), improve background ventilation, warm the cold wall where feasible — see condensation control.
- Rising damp: remove bridging or install a chemical DPC along the affected wall with salt-retardant replastering behind the units.
