What is rising damp? Understanding the problem

Getting the diagnosis right

A proper survey to BS 6576 and PCA guidance profiles moisture at different heights, checks for salts (nitrates and chlorides indicate ground moisture; their absence points elsewhere), inspects external levels for bridging, and rules out plumbing leaks and condensation before recommending a DPC. Treatment
Where rising damp is confirmed, treatment typically involves:
- Removing any bridging first — lowering ground levels, cutting back render, clearing cavities. Sometimes this alone resolves the problem.

- Salt-contaminated plaster removal — hacking off to around 300mm above the highest damp point and replastering with a salt-retardant renovating system.
- Drying time — walls dry at roughly one month per 25mm of thickness; a 225mm solid wall can take 6–12 months to dry fully. Redecorate with breathable finishes in the interim.
