What is dry rot? Dry rot is decay caused by the fungus Serpula lacrymans, the most destructive timber pathogen in UK buildings. Identification: what dry rot looks like
Learn four signs. Cuboidal cracking: affected timber shrinks and splits into roughly cubic blocks, cracking deeply across the grain — the signature no other UK decay reproduces at scale. Wood becomes dry, brittle, crumbling to powder under a screwdriver. Mycelium: in humid voids, luxuriant cotton-wool white growth; in drier air, silvery-grey skins with lilac and yellow tinges, spreading in sheets and strands across timber and masonry alike. Why dry rot happens — and how it spreads
Dry rot needs what all fungi need: moisture (timber above roughly 20% moisture content to germinate), timber to digest, still air and modest warmth. Treatment: what proper eradication involves
1) Find and kill the moisture source — the non-negotiable first step; dry rot in genuinely dry conditions eventually dies. 2) Expose the outbreak — lift floors, remove plaster and panelling to map the true extent; concealed spread is the rule. 3) Remove affected timber with margins — typically cutting back 300–500mm beyond visible decay, because mycelium runs ahead of symptoms. 4) Sterilise masonry — fungicidal treatment of walls the mycelium colonised, plus removal of surface growth. 5) Reinstate defensively — pre-treated replacement timber, isolation of new timber from masonry where practical, restored ventilation to voids. 6) Monitor — moisture checks over following seasons confirming the environment stays hostile.
